National All Breeds Show 2010 |

The long established National Holstein show at Stoneleigh, for the first time included the other UK dairy breeds and was in my view a success as the other Coloured breeds embraced the opportunity and produced some very attractive competitive classes with cattle from all regions including Cornwall, Kent, Pembrokeshire and Fife with several herds in particular from Wales making a welcome reappearance after TB restrictions. There were 7 Guernseys forward from 4 exhibitors with President-Elect Elsie Fallows and her family producing the Junior Champion with Eavesford Onwards Molly, what a pleasure it is to have the enthusiasm of Elsie within our ranks and it is to hoped that 2011 will mark a turnaround in Guernsey fortunes.

Top Ranked Heifers Jan 2010 |

The January 2010 proof run published by Dairy Co includes a listing of the top 1000 Guernsey females from England and Wales and Guernsey Island. The Top 10 heifers from England & Wales all have a £PLI of more than £+105 and the 7 that have been classified have an average score of +83.5 points. The leading heifer is a maternal sister to Beechgroves Ezekiel who has semen available at present from EGCS.

I believe that there have been 21 UK Guernsey cows classified as +93 points since 1996 when the Professional classifiers of Holstein UK took on the inspections.

Treasure Hunt on Guernsey |

I have been fortunate enough to spend the last two days on Guernsey Island in the company of two Guernsey enthusiasts who were making their first visit to the Island and also a "retired" breeder who still takes a great interest in the breed and who suggested the trip in search of Guernsey "treasure".

Beechgroves Cornelius ( +360 GMI) has risen to the top of the UK rankings based on GMI, rising above Aaron ( +353) ,Tiller Khan (+320) and Pedro (+313). Boskenna Junes Royal Oak is ranked at No 13 with a GMI of +256, this is his first proof. The Genetic base against which all Guernseys are measured has been changed, but as yet the changes have not been published but given that Aaron and Pedro were at the +500 level it would seem that the change is approx minus 150 points of GMI. Thornton Dilly 17 has become just the third UK Guernsey cow to be scored EX 95. She was inspected by Michael Parkinson recently and his score was confirmed this week by Meurig James. Dilly is owned by Andrew and Michelle Hall and is a member of the Thornton herd at Lodge Farm, Thornton Hough, Wirral Merseyside.

January Calving Guernsey Heifers |

There are 25 heifers due to calve in January 2010 for sale in West Cornwall, last crop of calves from good herd that was sold in 2007. For more details ring 07971 415664 UPDATE I managed to get down to see these heifers in Cornwall and was impressed by a bunch of well grown heifers and am pleased to say that subject to passing the TB pre movement test they will soon be joining an expanding Guernsey herd in Somerset , who are planning to increase their herd to 200 milking cows.
