At the recent Dairy Event, 2010, a young lady approached the EGCS stand with the good news that she had persuaded her father to purchase 20 Guernseys to add to the herd that she was now milking on a regular basis around her college studies. The young lady is Amy Jasper from Cornwall, who whilst still at school had been an active member of the FGB (Future Guernsey Breeders).
The herd at home had originally been a non-pedigree Guernsey herd that had initially been crossed with Friesian-Holstein and is now being crossed to Swedish Red. The Guernseys were purchased locally and were also non-pedigree and have been entered into the Supplementary Register, they were in calf to Guernsey on arrival and Amy has ordered “sexed” semen for the maiden heifers to quickly buiild her Guernsey numbers.
This calf is the youngest Guernsey on the farm and lost nothing in comparison to the “cross bred” calves with which she was being reared.
