Semen from Marglyn Action Mervyn was imported from Australia in 2007 in an effort to include Australia in the Guernsey Global Breeding Plan and to reflect the fact that the Australians had taken semen from Boskenna Junes Royal Oak in 2005.

Both bulls have now got proofs in Australia and are ranked at 107 on the Australian Index with 100 being the average, but Mervyn has a distinct advantage for all of the udder traits. EGCS are currently offering the semen at £7.50 a straw.

Joyce and Lyndon Cleggett have sent a couple of pictures of Mervyn daughters from their Brookleigh herd which demonstrate the udder quality.

I recently saw 5 Mervyn calves in the Woodlands herd of Sue and Martin Staples in Leicestershire and managed to get a picture of one of them.

Two fine young ladies in this picture taken at the end of the Junior handling class at the recent South West All Breeds Calf Show. The delighted first prize winner is Chloe Bottom and the calf is Trewarnevas Amirs Lillian.

This particular beautiful girl has arrived in the most perfect home at Arundells Farm, Curry Rivel and has ended a long succession of bull calves born to the Guernsey heifers reared by Brian and Sheila Adams.

Before the arrival of “Trudy” born on Thursday August 19th 2010 they had reared 15 heifers to downcalving since their first heifer calved in 2004 and had only had two heifer calves. With this in mind they invested in four straws of “sexed” semen from Spring Walk Sherberts Mint to use on their crop of maiden heifers. The heifers were moved when bulling to Overton Farm Babcary where the semen was stored in David Paull’s farm flask and where neighbour George did the Insemination achieving a 50% success rate.

The dam of Trudy was herself the daughter of a calf selected by Digby Gribble to go to the first All Britain All Breeds Calf show for her breeders Stuart and Alison Rathbone who were at that time milking a herd of 60 Guernseys that had originated at Bickfield. Hazeley Mayflower a daughter of Yogibear was one of the best heifers at Blacknor in Dorset in the year that Digby Gribble was milking the herd and gave over 8000 kgs as a heifer and has since scored VG88.

Trudy’s dam Chiddingstone B B Mayflower is now owned by Carol Willment and is the first cow in her Cariad herd, she has gone to Hinton Farm, Mudford Yeovil and is being milked and managed by the Bartlett family.

I have been impressed with the heifers and calves seen on the Canadian tour by Penny Lane Royal Oak Turley, who has a few daughters and one son at Brymor. I saw his dam on my first visit to the USA in the herd at Marodore. He was syndicated at an AGA Conference and the proceeds were given to establish a scholarship fund awarded annually at the Convention in honor of Ralph and Martha Turley.

This calf was seen in the barn of Rob and Julie Mason and was the only Guernsey calf in the barn but was quite outstanding.

Whilst travelling across Canada, we have seen several good dauighters of Coulee Crest Luxury Skipper in the herds that we have visited. Skipper was mainly tested in Canada by Semex, whilst his full brother Coulee Crest Luxury Spider was used in the USA.

This calf was spotted in the shed at Warringdale Farms and was out of a Milborne Bolero dam.

When starting these articles I commented on the pleasure to be had from the first heifer calves from a new bull, and on arrival at Dale Farm Grindon in Staffs, the first thing that Kath Salt told me was that they had two heifer calves by Spring Walk Sherbert Mint born that morning.( The CDI figure for Mint is wrong as EGCS have not entered the PTA for his Dam, it should be +269)

My eye was caught this week by Eavesford Grumpys Debbie in the Calf house at the Fallows. She is one of five daughters by Golden J Ronalds Grumpy at the farm but the first that I have seen. Having taken her picture, I looked her up in the CDI when I got home and was pleased to see that both dam and grandam are VG and the fourth dam was the EX Eavesford Yettes Debbie.

Calf of the Week

The best part of Dairy Farming for me has always been the birth of the new heifer calves, particularly if they are the first calves from a “new” bull, or perhaps a “rare” heifer from those cows who have bull calf after bull calf.

I thought that perhaps other users/viewers of this site would feel the same and this might become a useful additional feature for the website.

To start the ball rolling I was pleased to find this pretty girl at Hurdlebrook last week she is a daughter of Hurdlebrook H Lily 8 a first calver by Tredinney Landon Premium and the sire of the calf is Thornton Morpheus, the Junior Stock bull at Hurdlebrook who is the only Response son in the UK and out of the Ex95 Thornton Dilly 17.

Little Lily therefore carries the blood of two of the only three 95 point cows in the UK and she has a GMI of +109.
