23 females from 5 Exhibitors provided Colin Evans from Bancyfelin, Carmarthen with a challenging mornings work at this years Devon County Show. Once again Guernsey numbers were better than the Holstein or Jersey breeds combined and none of the adult Jersey classes had more than a single entry and five of the Holstein classes were contested by just 2 animals.
The cattle shed was however full but with mainly Beef animals with 10 different breeds in contention.

6 Guernsey calves were the first class forward and the Greenslades produced the winner here with Greensfield Mozi Seagull, with Catherine Mill’s and Richard Norman’s two Hawk heifers second and third with Cadbury Hawk Pretty 86 repeating her North Somerset placing over herdmate Cadbury Hawks Onyx 2, with the Greenslades in fourth place with Greensfield Mozi Noble.
6 Maiden heifers saw David Christophers, adding another win to the growing tally for Tredinney Buzzards Bracken 4 who was the All Britain Champion in February, and has been served to Yogibear for the 2010 season. In second place was Greensfield Icy Phyllis and this Spring Walk Icy Iceberg daughter was later to win the Pair Class with her older Iceberg sister.
In third place was Greensfield Monts H Ears and this heifer was full of dairiness but gave away quite a lot of size to the two above her.
3 in calf heifers had the “ringside” experts engaged in debate as at first sight Cadbury Silverado Amanda appeared to have too much power for Greensfield Icy Lady , but Amanda on her debut would not settle for Catherine Mills and Colin looked long and hard before giving the decision to Icy Lady, with Kingwell Monts Pointer from Jon White in third place.
3 in calf cows again caused some ringside discussion and Jon White’s Kingwell HP Ice Plumb the youngest cow gained a win over Je-Taime Lavender 4, a Goldfoot purchased at Ibberton in Dorset from the Old family and Greensfield Jonagold Sudley was placed third.
3 in milk heifers saw a ring debut for Clay Hill Chrissie 4 a Riverwood Tiller Khan heifer bred by Phil and Poppett Foord from Lewes in Sussex and one of 12 females purchased by James Warren recently as the Clay Hill herd is being dispersed.
Greensfield Monts Leapfrog and Greensfield Oldenburgs Swallow were second and third.
4 in milk cows saw Laity Farm Primrose 97 making a reappearance in the ring after an absence of a couple of years, and she now in her sixth lactation had just too much power and depth for Tredinney Hunters Memory who is in her second lactation and she held off the challenge of Kingwell Magic Sedge who was looking much better than she had at North Somerset.
The Group of three and Pair were both won by the Greenslades and Colin then produced his Championship line up which was full of quality all the way down the line and he had Primrose 97 as Champion with Chrissie 4 as Reserve Champion.
James Warren was also showing Jerseys and his Heifer Champion was the Interbreed Heifer Champion with Chrissie in Reserve.
A good turnout yet again and with the Greenslades and Norman/Mills going on to Cornwall in 12 days time that could be worth the visit.
Bath and West next week sees Crouch & Crouch returning to the fray can history repeat itself?
