I said there was no hope of improving UK the level of type 1 diabetes due to the unavailability of A2 milk. I was wrong. A2 milk has been available in some UK supermarkets since October 2012. A dairy company is genetically testing their cows. Milk from A2 producing cows is then being sold separately to milk from A1 producing cows.

As I described it is the peptide BCM-7, produced by the digestion of A1 milk, that causes type 1 diabetes. BCM-7 is linked to various other diseases. For example the oxidation of LDL particles in artery walls by BCM-7 leads to plaque formation and >coronary artery disease. These claims cannot be used to market A2 milk because of the risk of litigation from companies that sell the majority of milk which is from A1 producing cows. A2 milk is therefore advertised on the grounds that it tastes creamier and causes less frequent digestive problems than A1 milk. BCM-7 causes constipation and bloating due to its opiate like action.

It is feasible that all A1 dairy products could one day be replaced with A2 products. Hopefully soon A2 cream, yoghurt and butter will be available. If we are very lucky unpasteurised A2 milk from 100% grass fed animals might be available to those that prefer this type of milk. If the public was aware of the harm caused by A1 milk, demand for A2 milk might eliminate A1 milk from our diets.”

The above comment was posted by UK General Practioner Dr Neville from Hertfordshire on the BMJ website and gives a positive endorsement for A2 milk

I received this e-mail this morning from a customer of Ernie Durose who has recently started buying his Guernsleigh Cheese, which we believe to be the only cheese on the market from “tested A2” cows, my correspondent is a a mother named Louise, and I thank her for giving permission to use her testimonial

I only became aware of A2 milk a year ago having seen such huge improvements in my sons behaviour & gut after cutting milk out. Normal milk gives him headaches (enough to keep him off school), Hyperactivity, boils and eczema, bad tempered behaviour, tummy pain and completely loose stalls with a few hours of having milk. And because if his Autism, he wasn’t able to tell me he was in pain as it is what he grew up with. He only ever had Goats milk, as I had a feeling that he shouldn’t be having Cows milk however it had the same effect. I took him off all wheat and dairy products in September 2011 and not only us as parents but school and his teacher noticed a huge difference in his behaviour. He only has to have a piece if chocolate, something with butter, or cheese in then within 2 hours, he has accidents, needs to go to the toilet every half hour and then the hyperactivity and bad moods kick in and then I realise he is in pain.

We tried some A2 milk from a local farm a year ago but it went straight through him (the cows hadn’t been tested) and the usual reactions occurred. So I was very excited to then see it in Morrisons and he is fine with it, and then shortly after, we tried Ernies cheese and I cannot believe that he can put it in his mouth and have no reactions. I too have given up milk and have stopped having frequent 3 day migraines. I too am now trying the A2 products.

The final sale to disperse the Webbery herd of the Yewdall family was held yesterday 11th December 2012 on the farm near Bideford ,Devon.

The herd had passed three TB tests in the previous 9 months and the first sale in July 2012 of the spring calving cows saw an average of £1100 per head for both the Guernsey and Jersey sections of the herd.

Following a clear test in October a second sale was planned, but a cull cow was identified at the slaughterhouse with TB lesions (yet to be confirmed) and the herd sale was then restricted to buyers who were themselves under TB restriction.

As you might expect this had a negative effect on yesterdays trade. There were only two Guernsey herd owners present and one of them only had a licence to buy “dry” stock . Therefore Maurice Durbin was able to buy most of the in milk animals. The auctioneers had sorted the animals into batches of similar age and stage of lactation and the first batch of 8 first calved heifers which included the pick of the sale Lot 123 Webbery Rachel 9 by Tregallant Jester and tracing back to the Treloweth Rachel cow family sold for £600 as did the second batch of 8 fresh calved heifers. There were 3 daughters of Trewarnevas Ivor in these two groups which impressed.

Batch 3 of 8 second calvers made £560 again sold to the Durbins

Batch 4 which were a mixed bunch of 3rd and 4th calvers and included a couple of cows with foot or udder proiblems were withdrawn unsold.

The final batch of older cows included a couple of real good cows including Lot 134 Webbery Ivy Girl 5 by Trewey Surprise who will surely go VG or better when classified and Lot 143 Webbery Slipperwort 9 VG 85 a fifth calver sold when giving 30 kgs a day. She is a daughter of Brymor Stingboy . This batch of 6 good cows sold to the Durbin’s for £520.

Andrew Lewis bought 8 in calf Guernsey heifers for £500 a head and there were a couple of Spring Walk Sherbert Mint and Les Jaonnets Pippas Lad daughters that stood out in this bunch.

Andrew also bought 5 in calf Guernsey cows for £500

The Jerseys of which there were more than 100 in milk met a similar trade to the Guernseys sold to a top of £640 for a batch of 8 2nd calvers included some outstanding cows including Lot 42 who had not been classified but was Ex91/92 on the day and the fourth generation VG and was one in a batch of 9 that sold for £500. Older cows were sold for less than £400 and to my surprise there were no bidders for the spring calving Jersey in calf heifers.

The weaned calves which were mainly cross bred proved difficult to sell, making around £100 a head.

Elsie Fallows organised a Guernsey cheese tasting at the Livestock Show following on from her efforts at the last two shows.

We had 5 Guernsey milk cheeses available three of which are well established and successful and two from the “new kid” on the block Ernie Durose in Staffordshire.

The Cheshire Brie from the Hope family at Tarporley has been very popular in previous years and still had its advocates this year, and this was joined on the table by the Waterloo brie made by the Wigmores in Hampshire using milk from the Beechgroves herd in Bucks, the Isle of Wight Blue from Richard Hodgson and the two new cheeses from Ernie Durose.

Ernie has only started making cheese on the farm in Staffordshire this summer, although his Guernsleigh cheeses have been available over the last three years made by a third party.

The Waterloo and Isle of Wight cheeses are most widely available through www.longmancheesesales.demon.co.uk in the South East of England and also available on line

All of the cheeses were eagerly tasted and had their supporters but what comes across is just how “different” the Guernsey cheeses are from other cheeses in the market place.

Adam Flemiing who farms at Lower Swell , Stow on the Wold, has started retailing Guernsey milk via a vending machine in the local pub car park, the Guernsey herd established with the purchase of 4 Tretheene heifers from Chris Hall at Treen near Lands End has since been expanded to 16 cows and there are plans to increase to about 90 cows as demand for the milk increases.

Hamps Valley Annabelle 7 has added 2 more wins to her remarkable season. Having won at the Devon County in May , she has added wins at the Bath &West, Royal Cornwall, Stithians, Okehampton and lastly at the All Breeds Calf Show at Exeter on Sunday where she was made Reserve Champion Interbreed by all of the Dairy Breed Judges.

Shown by Brian and Sheila Adams on behalf of the ARC-Addington Trust, she has tremendous presence in the ring and has a great deal of style.

Her dam has recently classified VG in the breeders herd in Staffordshire where Don and Kath Salt have a very good herd of cows.

A sweet victory for me personally as my sister in New Zealand has been getting over excited by the fact that at one time NZ had more Gold Medals than Australia but neither had as many as Yorkshire!

Webbery Sale 30th July 2012

The sale of the spring calving portion of the Webbery herd of Guernseys and Jerseys took place on the farm in Devon yesterday.

The Guernsey cows met a better trade than the Jerseys with 27 of the 62 forward selling for more than £1050 (1000 gns).

The Jerseys were younger with 22 of the 90 sold being in their first lactation, whilst there were no Guernsey heifers in the sale but only 22 made more than 1200 gns with a top price of 1650 gns for Lot 142.

Andrew Lewis was the main buyer taking 22 Guernsey cows to join his Hartland View herd established in 2010,where 150 Guernsey cows share facilities with 350 high yielding Holsteins (avg over 10,000 kgs). The Guernseys are grazed and housed separately and all of the milk from both herds is sold to Cricketers Cheese.

Lot 19 W Lowton Claire 6 made 1520 gns , Lot 30 W Geraldine made 1480, Lot 40 W Trell Snowdrop 2 made 1450, Lot 50 W Aster made 1520, Lot 57 W Luckley Ivy 3 made 1750 and was the highest priced animal in the sale, Lot 58 W Bick Dot made 1650, Lot 87 W Buttertub 11 made 1550 ,Lot 94 W Quinta 6 made 1520, Lot 123 W Coach Curly 3 made 1650 and these were all bought by Andrew Lewis.

The other major buyer was another Mr Lewis from Wrexham North Wales who purchased 14 and competed with Andrew Lewis for most of the better cows, he paid 1280 for lot 32 W Bobby, 1600 for Lot 44 W Bettina 7 an H83 2nd calver sired by K Posh Paddy sold doing 32 kgs a day,1520 for Lot 54 W Marguerite 6 and 1280 for Lot 113 W Kenvin Bouquet 3 .

Duncan Vincent was looking for cows that were full of milk as the Devonshire Farmhouse Ice Cream business based on the farm is currently short of milk , he bought 4 the best of whom was Lot 68 W Creampot an Aaron daughter giving 38 kgs a day in her 4th lactation and gave over 9000 kgs in her third lactation.

The other major buyers were the Fallows family from Staffordshire who bought 7 cows for their Eavesford herd including Lot 80 W Enid 4 for 1400 and Lot 104 W Sally 2 for 1620 they also bought a very nice calf Lot 58 A W Bick Dot 3 by Ezekiel for 360.

The calves at foot generally sold well for between 180 and 360 gns but the maiden heifers which were well grown and some were big enough to serve proved more difficult to sell making between 300 and 400 gns, not helped by the auctioneers decision to match them by size in threes, fours and fives and to mix cross breds with pure breds.
