Auctioneers Kivells had invited Guernsey breeders to join with Jersey breeders in a sale at the Bristol Sales centre close to the M5 motorway.
Three breeders had brought forward 42 females which met a sound trade particularly for the calved cattle.
Rita and Mark Dunn from Cornworthy Devon, had brought forward 10 cows and calved heifers from their Rosewood herd and they were first through the ring.
Andrew and Debbie Lewis from Barnstable bought six of these cows to add to their newly established Hartland View herd including Lot 102 Bickfield Dot 66 VG87 CME for 920 guineas, Lot 104 Rosewood Rob Ryegrass for 950 gns and Lot 111 Bickfield Mayflower 13 EX 91 for 1000 gns.
Ian Crouch from Chettle Dorset paid 1000 gns for Lot 106 Rosewood Suzi due with 8th calf in Jan 2011 but in calf to a British Blue.
James Warren from Tredinney, St Buryan Cornwall had entered 8 fresh calved heifers and they sold very well with Andrew and Debbie Lewis buying seven of the heifers. Lot 113 Tredinney Cornelius Tansy 5, potentially a third generation VG or better and tracing to the EX92 Stratfieldsaye Tansy 5 made the top price of 2050 gns with Colin Evans from Carmarthen as the disappointed under bidder.
The Lewis’s also bought Lot 115 Tredinney Buzzards Tara 9 for 1680 gns and her dam had been the 2009 Lovett Cameron Memorial trophy winner. Lot 116 Tredinney Prince Rose 16 for 1350 gns and Lot 114 Tredinney Lamars Sally 4 for 1200 gns.
The one that got away was Lot 117 Tredinney Hawks Buttercup 20 a big framed heifer doing 29 kgs daily and backed by 3 VG dams and she was bought for 1050 gns by 14 year old Andrew Thomas to add to the family’s quality 180 cow Holstein herd in Lutterworth Leics within in which they are building a Guernsey nucleus of about 40 cows.
The third consignment were 24 served and maiden heifers from Caroline and Martin Greenslade from Blackborough Devon and these smaller and younger heifers did not sell as well but quality was still in demand with Lot 135 Greensfield Mozi Rosebank who had been Champion Coloured Breed Calf at the 2009 Dairy Show making 1000 gns and selling to Mrs James from Carlisle who also brought four others.
Richard Norman from Marston Magna Somerset bought two giving 820 gns for Lot 121 Kingwell Mays Portia.
Matthew and Coral Senior bought four spring calving heifers for their developing Quick Brew herd at Crewkerne.
Mr Davis from Langport Somerset bought two served heifers and two maidens.
Mr and Mrs Parsons who are neighbours of the Thomas family at Lutterwoth bought one served heifer and three heifer calves to add to the two Guernseys they purchased at the Watling sale last October.
The top priced maiden heifer was the stylish Lot 138 Greensfield May King Ears and she was sold for 720 gns to Ian Crouch who also bought three other bulling heifers.
