Shortage of Milk on Guernsey Island

Mike as ever makes some interesting points but having had the chance to raise the subject with a few of the dairy farmers yesterday it seems that there is little enthusiasm to take this opportunity. Apprently 82% of the existing 8 million litre supply is devoted to the liquid supply on the Island and only 18% is available to supply the added value markets. With the Guernsey consumer becoming more interested in the “local” provenance of their food, there are obvious opportunities to develop the dairy business. The real concern however is the level of supply during the winter months and some form of seasonality payment will be required, but at present the milk price is paid equally throughout the year.
