South West Guernsey Association Annual Competition

At yesterdays AGM of the SWGA the results of the annual competitions that had been judged on farm last Autumn by David Crouch were announced and the trophies were presented.

21 herds took part, some for the first time, and included herds in Cornwall, Devon, Gloucester, Isle of Wight, Somerset and Wiltshire. David Crouch commented on the quality of the cattle seen and in particular the young stock.

These competitions are decided by a combination of inspection points and production points plus points for regular calving. The young stock are judged seperately and the points are added for the overall prizes. The herds are split into 3 sections according to herd size.

CLASS 1-THE VELSHEDA BOWL (up to 65 cows)

All four of these competitors are new entrants to the competitions.

CLASS 2-THE DRAGONHILL CUP (66-95 cows)

Paul Younger makes a welcome return to the Pedigree ranks.

The Medium Leweston Pot was awarded to the Best Herd under 95 cows and

1st Mark & Rita Dunn with the Rosewood Herd from Totnes, Devon

2nd Andy & Rachel Payling with the Oxlynch Herd from Stonehouse, Gloucestershire

3rd Nick & Christine Gosling with the Berkeley Herd from Wroughton, Wiltshire

CLASS 3-BURCOMBE CUP (96 to 149 cows)

CLASS 4-TRELUGGAN CUP (150+ cows)

The Large Leweston Pot for the herd over 95 cows was awarded to

1st R, P, L and I Griffin with the Briddlesford Herd from the Isle Of Wight

2nd D, R and J Warren with the Tredinney Herd from St Buryan, Cornwall

3rd D Vincent with the Kenvin Herd from Chagford, Devon

Congratulations to the Griffin family on winning at their first attempt in the South West competitions.

There are 2 Royal Champions in this line up but Grandee who is milking in her 11th lactation is placed between the two of them and the cows in 4th and 5th have yet to grace the show ring.

BULL PROGENY – THE ROLLESTON TROHPY click on the bulls name to be taken to CDI information.

There were 23 groups of 3 daughters by identified Sires competing for this trophy and it is good to see GGBP bulls taking the top 3 spaces, although arguably bulls 4 and 5 should have had a wider usage but are both primarily used in the Trewey and Bourton herds.
