The Future of the Guernsey?

Every time I switch on the radio, there are tidings of gloom and doom these days and it is easy to get depressed, but meanwhile in the real world, cows need milking twice a day and fortunately the next generation of calves are arriving and the kids involved with the Guernsey breed are also growing apace.

Looking at the pictures of the recent training camp in Cornwall, it seems that FGB is going from strength to strength and lets hope that the rearranged dates for the All Britain All Breeds Calf show (ABAB) at Stoneleigh on the 13th-15th February 2009, do not restrict the number of Guernseys competing.

In 2006 we had 24 quality calves present and made a real positive iimpact as both calves and kids were able to compete at that level. We should plan to try for more calves and kids this year subject to stall space being available.

I was pleased to hear that the Buzzard calf from Tredinney that was the winner at Stithians is now owned by David Christophers, who has been looking to get involved with Guernseys since the ABAB of 2006. David and his family have been instrumental in the success of the FGB, giving up countless hours to help with training.

Given the quality of the calves and the quality of the kids, then it would appear that the future is in safe hands.
