The Guernsey Pipeline

These 23 Young bulls have been registered with EGCS between August 07 and November 08 and will provide bulls for AI but also will be used as Natural Service sires. Ever since the launch of GGBP in 2001, one of the statistics calculated has been the percentage of daughters registered by Proven Sires, by Young Sires used in AI and Natural Service Sires.

I included these figures in the Paper about GGBP given to the 2007 World Guernsey Conference. I do not have access to the data to do the necessary updates but would not expect the balance to have changed very much to date.

In 2007 the proportions of Female Registrations by sire type were

Proven Sires  22%

Young Sires in A1 51%

and Natural Service sires 27%

The equivalent figures in the USA as presented to the 2007 World Conference were 27% of registrations for Young Sires and the balance for Proven Sires, this is possible because of the continued support of the Breeding Companies who are still prepared to collect and store several thousand straws of semen from each bull, which is then available once the bull gets a proof.

The UK Breeding companies withdrew support from the Coloured breeds about 15 years ago and with hindsight that forced EGCS to take responsibility for the Guernsey breed’s future and the advantage of reliance on Young bulls is that we are reducing the time between generations and have allready used 2 sons of Pedro and a son of Aaron will be available shortly whilst the first US sons of Aaron won’t be available until 2010.

Three of the four bulls at the top of this table are by young sires awaiting there first proofs, the average GMI of +195 is about twice that of the heifer calves born in 2007 with which most of these bulls will be working.

* The two Iceberg sons Ezekiel and Mr Freeze will have better GMI’s if the Sires PA’s were properly entered into the EGCS database.
