The question of which has been the best Guernsey bull has been the topic on the WGCF Tour bus today as we travelled from Frederickton to Moncton New Brunswick. The question was posed by Bernie Heissner who used to work for the AGA and now works for COBA/Select Sires. He and Blaine Crosser had made a list score whilst at the conference, triggered by the “genomics” debate and wondering which of the most successful bulls had the “least” relationship and could therefore offer “outcross” genetics.
There were contributions from one Canadian, two from Australia, UK and the USA and each ranked the bulls one to 10, I then entered them into a spread sheet this evening and worked out a composite score.
Inevitably the USA list differs from the rest as only bulls that were used overseas were included but certain bulls featured on several lists and the table reads as follows.
A lot of the older bulls had sons used in the countries concerned and carry very similar breeding but it would seem that Goliath and Royal Oak may offer the most difference.
Did we miss any bulls who should be on this list? There were another 26 bulls listed in the 7 lists submitted.
