In 2007 there were 24 Guernsey cows that have bettered the Lifetime production standard of the Grand Diploma of Merit (GDM) which is set at 5000 kilos of Fat and Protein. The awards are made automatically by the computer system and a list is kept in the office but no longer published for “cost saving” reasons. At a time when dairy cow fertility is said to be in decline then these cows are deserving of greater recognition.

With 3 cows classified Excellent and 8 VG of the 17 Classified this would tend to support the theory that high classification ultimately supports high lifetime production. Two of these cows are daughters of GDM cows and Buckmotts Polyanthus 88 was the dam of Easby Iceman. It may be that we should introduce a further award as the trend is for cows to reach GDM in fewer lactations ( the youngest to date Boskenna June Ex 94 in six lactations).
