At a recent meeting of the Breed Development Committee it was agreed that a table of “possible” bull mothers should be published.
This is not an “inclusive” list and if you have cows that you think are of equal merit then please let Jon White or myself know.
Whilst we will probably only require two or three young bulls a year for semen collection, other sons of these cows will all play a part in the Guernsey breeds future as every year more than 30% of heifer calves registered are by natural service.
42 of the 45 females have been Classified and average 84.74 points but 26 of these are scored as heifers and we would expect the average score to rise as they mature and are scored again.
The 45 average +368M + 17.3 F -0.03%F + 12.4 P -0.01%P +£109 PLI +299 GMI,
given that the breed base has been raised twice since the GMI was launched the combined Fat+ Protein level of 29.7 if backdated to 2000 would now be over +50 kgs of F+P or twice the original target.
So far these 20 cows have only produced six sons, Beechgroves Elinor 14 has two Beechgroves Ezekiel GMI 341 who has has semen distributed and whose calves are now arriving, and Beechgroves Ezra GMI 331 by Nomar, selected for use in 2011.
Trevider T Pedro Bonnie has an Aaron son Trevider Bonnies Aaron born in August 2010 with a GMI of 382 that should be available in 2012.
Luckley Violet 5 has an Iceberg son Bocaddon Iced Glacier with a GMI of 299, but he is barred from AI centre collection by the TB rules and can only be collected for “on farm” use in England and Wales.
Tredinnick Anneka 3 has an Ivor son Tredinnick Augustus GMI 243 and he has not been selected for use.
Thornton Aurea 21 has two sons Thornton Helios GMI 208 and Thornton Aether GMI 208 neither of whom have been selected.
Fortunately 12 of the 20 cows have had 16 daughters between them.
