Shortage of Milk on Guernsey Island

Five years after the belated introduction of quotas to Guernsey Island the Island Dairy are calling for an extra 2 million litres of milk (+25%) and the question is whether the 20 or so dairy farmers on the Island will be able to find the extra cows given that there is a ban on the importation of live animals.

In order to fill this quota there will be needed an extra 300- 400 cows or an extra 20 cows per herd on average but where will they come from. It might be a good time to start Embryo Transfer with the best cows particularly now that sexed semen is avaibable from some of the best young Guernsey bulls.
